Winter is here and with it the arrival of coughs, colds and other winter respiratory illnesses. The NHS is here for you this winter if you fall ill but you can relieve pressure on our services by self-help.

  • Visit your local pharmacy who are ready to help you with over the counter remedies for coughs, colds, flu and other illnesses.
  • Get vaccinated against flu and get your Covid booster
  • Check you have enough of your prescription. It can take a few days to process your medicine so make sure you don’t run out.
  • Ensure you have over the counter remedies at home such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, antacids, anti-diarrhoea medication, a first-aid kit, a thermometer and any medicine for children.

As temperatures drop, remember that other people such as older neighbours, friends and family members, may need some extra help. From simply keeping in touch to making sure they’re stocked up with enough food supplies, there’s a lot that can be done to help.

Cold weather can take its toll, especially on older people, young children, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Here are some tips to stay safe and well:

  • Plan ahead by looking at the weather and stock up on food and medicines.
  • Keep your home warm, ideally at least 18°C and take simple measures to reduce drafts.
  • Wear layers to stay cosy and conserve heat.
  • Keep active if you can, even a few minutes of light movement indoors can help boost your circulation.
  • If you feel unwell, seek advice early—your local pharmacy can help!
  • Call 111 if you need further help or in an emergency call 999.
