While Christmas is traditionally associated with merriment and good cheer – a time for getting together with friends and family for celebration – many people struggle with their mental health at this time of year, for a variety of reasons.

Whether it’s loneliness due to the prospect of facing Christmas alone, financial stress, depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), these are just some of the reasons why our mental health can suffer during the holidays. However, it’s important to understand that, if you or someone you know is struggling at Christmas, you’re not alone – and there are things that can help you cope and make things more manageable.

Plan ahead – choose quieter shopping times and locations. Or shop online which is so easy nowadays.

Set expectations – don’t compare yourself to perfect looking Christmases on social media that probably aren’t the full picture. Don’t impose so-called social standards on yourself.

Just say no – if a person, gathering or situation isn’t making you feel good, just walk away or make an excuse to not participate. Don’t overwhelm yourself with commitments – it isn’t worth compromising your mental health.

Practice self care – remembering to take time for yourself and stepping away from the hustle and bustle will help manage anxiety. Eating well, getting some fresh air and sticking to your routine can all help.

Sara, 34 from Southampton, reached out to NHS 111 when she felt overwhelmed. “I spoke to a nurse who didn’t make me feel dismissed or stupid. She listened, helped me with breathing exercises, and told me about The Lighthouse service. The call was really helpful – it felt like someone finally understood.”
