Contraception and vasectomy

The pill

Thousands of women across England are now able to get the contraceptive pill at their local pharmacy without needing to contact their GP first. Pharmacies across the country are offering the new service for the first time, increasing choice for women in the ways in which they can access contraception.  Women can access this service for new contraception starts or continuation of repeat medication.

The rollout is part of the government and the NHS’s primary care access recovery plan, which committed to making it quicker and easier for millions of people to access healthcare on their high street.

If you have concerns about your method of contraception, wish to discuss Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (e.g., contraceptive injections, implants and ‘coils’)  please submit an Anima.

Implants and coils

We have fully trained staff who are licensed to insert coils and implants. There is a waiting list for this service. Let us know if you want to discuss this option, and feel free to find out more at your initial contraception clinic appointment or at any of your subsequent annual reviews.

You can find out more about long acting contraception and other aspects of women’s health on our dedicated services page.

Vasectomy

  • Vasectomy, also called male sterilisation, is a permanent method of contraception.
  • It’s a procedure that stops sperm being ejaculated from the penis during sex.
  • It’s usually carried out under local anaesthetic and takes around 30 minutes. It’s common to feel some pain for 1 to 2 weeks afterwards.
  • Vasectomy is available on the NHS. There is usually a waiting list.
  • It may be possible to reverse a vasectomy, but this does not always work. Reversal is not usually available on the NHS.
